Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa - Vampire Weekend

For anyone who likes Talking Heads - and thought there was something not quite right with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Vampire Weekend have drawn from Afropop rather than draw on Talking Heads drawing on Afropop (as Clap Your did)… and it sounds good as a result, right now.

The commissar vanishes

King leans forward. “I’ll tell you something that’s absolutely astonishing. In China, when Mao died, at his funeral there was a photograph taken of all the bureaucrats in a long, long line. But there were four carefully retouched blanks in the picture - the Gang of Four. Underneath, in the caption to the picture, they laboriously listed everybody, a name and then a comma. When it got to the Gang of Four, there were three x’s, comma, then three x’s comma… Amazing. They wanted you to know that they’d gone, and this was a warning: this is what you’re going to get, if you don’t watch out.”

Serge Gainsbourg on his stretcher

Just had a heart attack 1973.

In his hallway on a stretcher - refused to be moved until the ambulancemen changed the orange blanket they had put over him. He said that the colours clashed, said Jane Birkin.

His life a struggle. The best form of revenge is to live well.

George Formby: A troubled genius

George Formby: A troubled genius by David Bret - 1999

George and wife Beryl went to South Africa - insisted on playing to black audiences. Father of apartheid Daniel Francois Malan phoned them up - Beryl told him to “piss off” (?)

Harry Partch and Maya Deren

There was a West Coast scene - USA - 1960s.

Meshes of the afternoon music is by

Teiji Ito, not Partch. Partch didn’t like Cage.

Partch’s favourite film of his music is supposed to be:

Rotate the Body in All Its Planes—Ballad for Gymnasts (1961) 8:51

Diane Arbus - projecting strangeness

Diane Arbus: Revelations was published in 2003.

Diane Arbus photographer. She was alienated and a Weegee fan. Tried to show what is not normally seen - that was new back then. Strangeness of existence - the ceremonies and isolation. Use of flash increases isolation - blackening background.

Her final note has never been found. Removed by medical inspector? July 26 1971.

See: Woman carrying a child in Central Park - 1956

One of her favourites was Untitled (6) 1971

Neil Young - Wonderin - great video

What’s the technique here? Neil’s doing his performance slowly? - it’s then sped up?
