When the wheel entered Aztec imagination

November 1519.

Aztec ‘emperor’  Montezuma met Spanish explorer Cortes on a causeway across the lake of Mexico - it lead to Tenochtitlan.

The Spanish rode on horses, had fighting dogs, and carried cannon on carts. The wheel was seen.

Montezuma was probably wearing a headdress and sandals similar to those in the Museum of Mankind, Vienna (I’ve seen it?).

Montezuma identified  Cortes with lost God Quetzalcoatl - but this was for internal politic reasons?

Monk Bernardino Sahagun had a go at translating the welcoming speech - a translation from 16th century Nahuatl. Monk Bernardino Sahagun attempted to recover the nature of the Aztec civilisation.

Invisible man by Ralph Ellison (1952)

Lots of literary styles. America’s first post-modernist novel. The journey of a black American man - from poverty and college to jazz and riots.

John Peel

I’m still throwing away bits of newspapers etc - just looking back at The Guardian newspaper - October 27 2004 - it includes John Peel’s obituary.

I was at Peel’s funeral for the BBC - I think I must have one of the only audio recordings of Gambaccini’s tribute to Peel (the Cathedral staff disconnected the feed cables, if I remember rightly)

I’ll have to dig my CD out - but in his tribute I’m sure Gambaccini said that Peel had probably listened to more recorded music than anyone alive, ever. A sad day - I’m not saying anything new here - but Peel really was a light in the darkness.

Joe Brown - I’ll see you in my dreams

Joe’s on Later With Jools Holland: Series 31 - Episode 2.

I hope he’s ok.

He  performed: I’ll see you in my dreams

I’ve seen him do this a couple of times - while standing at the back of theatres. What the TV programme didn’t capture is - live - his audience sing along - and there’s this tremendous wave of warmth - a remarkable performer.
