Rupert Murdoch: Photos of the dead don’t sell newspapers

In 1994, Piers Morgan was editor of the British News of the World newspaper.

Proprietor Rupert Murdoch once advised Piers that splashing (putting on the front page) a photo of gangster Ronnie Kray in his coffin was  a big mistake.

Apparently Rupert said that celebrities in coffins sell American magazines and not newspapers.

Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie agreed - his splash of Grace Kelly lying in state did not sell.

Piers Morgan’s book about newspapers ‘The Insider’ is published by Ebury Press.
